Preparing to Say Goodbye

There are no rules about how you take leave of a loved one who has died.

Everyone has different feelings, experiences and indeed fears, when it comes to seeing their loved one after death. These reactions are totally individual, irrespective of age or culture and we will always respect yours.

One of the biggest factors in a decision to view someone after death is previous experience. Seeing a loved one totally at peace can be enormously comforting and helpful. Equally, a bad memory will endure for a long time.

Things That Make a Difference

The length of time between death and the viewing – the human body begins a process of change after death and even hygienic treatment (embalming) can only slow this process down, not stop it.

The circumstances of the death – trauma is the obvious consideration, but some drugs, especially cancer treatments, affect the body and its rate of change too.

The funeral director – this is an area where competence is simply not enough. They must really care about the final result, care that this person looks their very best for this farewell, and understand that the family’s last image of their loved one will be long-lasting.

How You Can Help

A favourite photograph – little details such as parting the hair correctly and the right shade of eye shadow or lipstick can make all the difference.

Dental Prosthetics – please bring in false teeth, dentures and plates wherever possible.

Clothing – a “signature” outfit reflects the life that has ended. Alternatively we can provide a tasteful gown.

Make-up and perfume – if your loved one always took care to be beautifully made up we would like to reflect that now. A favourite scent is often associated with happy memories and special occasions.

PLEASE REMEMBER: We are here to support your family, including the best advice based on our many years of experience, helping everyone understand what to expect so that each person can make a confident decision.
