Celebrants

Your beliefs help define you and shape the life you lead.

This is why it is so important that your funeral ceremony should accurately reflect those beliefs. A good match between celebrant, ceremony and your family’s needs will make a lasting difference to your grief journey.

We have two experienced and totally approachable Celebrants who will help and advise on the best possible style of service to meet your needs It is totally your choice how the service is designed from traditional Christian liturgy through to an entirely Humanist or celebration of a life.

Ceremonies can be shaped to suit your family, for example, many people find favourite hymns and prayers very comforting even if the rest of the funeral is not religious.

We start by spending listening and taking the time to learn about the person who has died and what they mean to those left behind.

Some celebrants, like us, are particularly keen to support family participation during funerals; they will help guide you beforehand and will be ready to step in on the day if you become overwhelmed.

Below you will find a brief summary of the principal types of celebrant to help you understand what to expect:

Religious

A service taken by a member of clergy from a particular faith – here we include the Earth religions such as Paganism.

These services will usually follow the written liturgy of the faith. Many people find the language and structure of traditional religious services both comforting and inspiring.

A service will usually include music, hymns or songs, an address from the officiant (sermon), a tribute to the person who has died and prayers.

Civil Ceremony

A professional Civil Funeral Celebrant will prepare and present a ceremony that reflects the needs, beliefs and values of the deceased person and their bereaved family.

Using skill and experience a good civil celebrant will be able to create content that responds to each family’s wishes, some will be totally non-religious, others will include prayers and hymns as well as the main tribute and, readings and music if desired.

Humanist

An officiant from the British Humanist Association will prepare a secular ceremony without any spiritual language or any references to an after-life.

Some Humanist celebrants are happy to include prayers read by others, or possibly hymns.

The main focus of the ceremony is the tribute to the person who has died, along with music, readings and a period of silent reflection which, for those who do have a faith, can be used for private prayer.

Before meeting your Celebrant:

Gather favourite photographs, favourite items and good memories to share.

Make brief notes about favourite music, relationships and special events or achievements in your loved one’s life.

Discuss whether any friend or family-member might like to contribute to the service through writing, reading or speaking.

If you have chosen a cremation service but think that the 30 minute service is too short for all of the material you want to share and for the contributors who want to take part then please let us know.

Our experience and responsiveness to your family’s needs will ensure that everything that matters to you can be included in the overall “goodbye” – for example this might mean a gathering of friends and family the night before the funeral, or arranging a Memorial Service after the committal.
